Indonesia has almost a million mosques! Now the Indonesian Council of Muslim Scholars has announced that a thousand will be converted to run on sustainable principles and will be centres for educating the public on green technologies and recycling methods. This follows a number of eco-fatwas, including a landmark ruling against lighting fires in forest areas.
The programme is being championed by Shaykha Huzaema Tahiddo Yanggo, the Council’s president, and one of the few women to rise to the highest position of religious authority in a Muslim country.
